Do you think a Formula1 type of race series run entirely by the worlds major car companies would be more entertaining than the current F1? Would it reduce the current financial gap between the front and back of the grid? Would it produce more equally competitive cars and better racing? Would it soften the current TV deals and make F1 more accessible to more countries on Live TV?

Rather than taking money from drivers for pit lane speeding, dangerous driving and the like why not award them penalty points. Lets give them one or two points for each offence and then ban them from a race when they reach 5.

Is Traction Control good for the sport?

Start: 12-Mar-2001
End: 26-Mar-2001

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

The FIA have decided that as of the Grand Prix of Spain automatic traction control will once again be acceptable in F1. Just put your foot down and your onboard computer will balance the torque into your wheels against the grip available on the track and ensure you get non of that nasty wheel spin stuff. This will help your getaway at the lights as well as keeping you cool around the corners.

This will either mean that the cars race closer as everyone will be more equal on the track no matter how good a throttle balancer they are, or the cars with the best software will win. Either way this is sure to decrease lap times.

Is being a test driver a good opportunity to move up?

Start: 9-Nov-2000
End: 22-Nov-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Several F1 drivers have taken test positions for the 2001 season presumably hoping to emulate Olivier Panis who is back in a race seat after a year of testing with McLaren. With the teams being so spread out performance wise testing could be the best way to prove ones ability in a competitive car.

Remember a test seat could also turn into a race seat if one of the main drivers cannot race. This year Burti replaced Irvine when he was ill and is now in the race seat for 2001. Many years ago a certain tester called Mika Hakkinen stepped into a McLaren seat when full time driver Michael Andretti left the team mid season. Mika out qualified team mate Senna for his first race and became a full time race driver.

With CART coming to Europe next year and F1 becoming more and more predictable would your interest switch sports if the stars did?

Today it seems F1 is much too much machinery based, whoever drives McLaren and Ferrari will be the top 4 in the championship. CART on the other hand seems to be much more wide open with different people and teams winning the races all the time. Do you follow the sport or the stars?

Was 2000 the best season ever?

Start: 24-Oct-2000
End: 31-Oct-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

A somewhat lightweight question which reflects the mood of the moment. Was 2000 entertaining? Were Michael and Ferrari always destined to win after their one-two in Australia? Which was the best season in recent memory? Only you know...

Please don't "Ask Bernie" or force us to post the picture of Nicole Bobek from figureskating.com. Although we are sure Tracey Mango does not have to deal with the FIA there is certainly space for advertising so maybe a discussion should be started.

Joking apart the photos' question is very serious, as are some of our recent letters from Bernie's Formula One Management company. But more of that later.…

Are photos required for a good F1 website?

Start: 19-Oct-2000
End: 23-Oct-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

A strange question as of course all F1 sites include photos. Not so strange when you realise that the FIA specifically ban sales to websites.

I will explain, recently we received a message from our photographic suppliers telling us that unfortunately they were unable to continue to sell F1 pictures to our website. On further investigation it seems that all FIA accredited F1 photographers are prohibited from selling their images to F1 websites. This came as quite a surprise to ourselves and our suppliers who had been informed that if they continued to sell pictures to GALE FORCE their photographers would be banned from the Grand Prix of Malaysia.

But all websites have photos! Well yes they do, but notice they are never credited to actual photographers or photo agencies!

Therefore the question asks actually how important are photographs to an F1 website.

Will a team other than McLaren/Ferrari win the championship in the next 2 years?

Start: 11-Oct-2000
End: 18-Oct-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Since 1998 McLaren and Ferrari have significantly out classed all other teams in the World Championship. The third place team has often been around 100 points behind second. What happened to the other teams?

This year 1996 and 1997 championship winners Williams are third in the championship but they sit 107 points behind McLaren with one race still to go. Of their 32 starts this season they have only finished in the points 14 times with their best being three third places.

Last year Jordan were third but this year are only sixth with 9 points finishes and a best of two third places.

Benetton won the championship in 1995 and this year are 4th so far with 6 finishes in the points and a best of 2nd place.

How long can Ferrari and McLaren keep this up?

Do you think reducing the testing in 2001 will make the teams more even?

Start: 6-Oct-2000
End: 10-Oct-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

The FIA have announced serious cut backs in the number of days available for testing next season. The principal reason for this seems to be guaranteeing spectators more track action in the Friday sessions.

A side effect could be that by reducing the available track time the wealthier teams would have less chance to experiment. This could bring them closer performance wise to the lower teams that do not have the funds to test at every available opportunity.

Would you like to see F1 on the Indy Oval?

Start: 26-Sep-2000
End: 5-Oct-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

The Grand Prix of USA was held at the Indianapolis Speedway but used less than 50% of the famous banked oval track. Much of the circuit was a twisty infield section specially built for F1.

It makes one wonder what the race would have been like if they had used the complete oval? If CART can run on ovals, race tracks and street circuits why not F1?

Would you like to see motor racing be an Olympic event?

Start: 19-Sep-2000
End: 25-Sep-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

It's very easy to dismiss this question with a No - of course not. But consider the spectacle if it could be organized, Hakkinen and Salo for Finland, Schumacher and Frentzen for Germany, Alesi and Panis for France, Tracy and Villeneuve for Canada, Andretti and Vasser for USA.

A second, possibly more challenging, question would be "How could motor racing be an Olympic sport?".

Simple, just take 8 identical race cars then run heats, semi-finals and finals, just like the Olympic swimming competitions.

The Olympic Gold Medal for Motor Racing - a truely international award.

Should the Italian GP have been Red Flagged after the first lap crash?

Start: 11-Sep-2000
End: 18-Sep-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Six cars crashed at the second chicane on the first lap of the Grand Prix of Italy. Five ended up in the gravel and one limped back to the pits on three wheels. The Safety Car came on track to slow the field while the debris was removed. Tragically a fire marshal was badly hurt in the accident and later died. Attending to the injured man and clearing the debris took over 25 minutes. During this time the field completed 11 laps behind the Safety Car.

Should the race have been stopped (Red Flagged) as soon as the extent of the crash was known rather than keeping the drivers on track? A restart may have allowed some of the drivers involved in the accident to rejoin the race in their spare cars. It would certainly have saved Jensen Button some embarrassment.

Thanks to reader todt for suggesting this question.

Should Zonta have pulled over to let the leaders past in Spa?

Start: 31-Aug-2000
End: 8-Sep-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

So here we are in the Grand Prix of Belgium, Mika, in second place has caught Michael in the space of a few laps but cannot find a way past. The charging duo come up behind Zonta. Michael passes to the left of the BAR hoping Mika will be blocked before they enter the corner. Instead Mika passes on the other side of the BAR and beats Michael to the corner.

Should Zonta have pulled over to let the leaders through rather than just sitting in the middle of the road? If he had then Mika would not have had the space to pass on his right and Michael may have won the race.

Will Premier 1 Grand Prix beat F1 for viewers?

Start: 22-Aug-2000
End: 28-Aug-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

What is Premier 1 Grand Prix and why do we even mention it? Premier 1 Grand Prix is a new single chassis/engine formula that will hit the tracks of Europe and South America in 2002 [See our News Item] . We feel this F3000 clone (also a single chassis/engine series) is worth a thought because, as we understand it, the teams will be aligned with major football clubs.

Whats football? well football is a massively popular sport based in Europe and South America which dwarfs F1 in shear scale and fanatical following. As a result of this high popularity several of the world class teams have risen above the kicking-the-ball-in-the-net stuff and are looking to develop their brand in other ways such as sponsoring race car teams.

Premier 1 Grand Prix could combine the action of F3000, the money of the worlds top footy clubs and their massive world-wide following with mega TV hype and marketing to make instant stars of their drivers and a higly entertaining race series. For the many talented drivers growing old in F3 and F3000 waiting for an F1 seat Premier 1 Grand Prix could provide a whole new arena for their skills. Would driving for Manchester United or Liverpool (for instance) be a better career move than Arrows/Sauber or even CART?

What do you think?

Was Hungary the most boring race you have ever seen?

Start: 15-Aug-2000
End: 21-Aug-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Michael was well ahead in the Free sessions, Hakkinen was eclipsed by Coulthard in Qualifying, it was all set to be a Schumacher vs Coulthard shoot out with World Champion Hakkinen and Germany winner Barrichello bringing up the rear with Ralf in the middle for overtaking exercise. Would Schumacher zig-zag the start? Would Coulthard out class his World Champion team mate again? The lights went out, Hakkinen passed Schumi into the first corner and that was the end of the racing. There was vast excitement on lap 51 when it looked like Coulthard might get out of the pits in front of Schumacher (a valid racing move these days) but it was to no avail. Schummi stayed 2nd and Coulthard stayed 3rd. It looked like the improvements McLaren had made to Hakkinen's car since the Warm-Up 5 hours earlier had missed Coulthard completely. Hakkinen, Schumacher, Coulthard, Schumacher, Barrichello and Frentzen finished 77 laps of driving in exactly the same positions as they finished lap 1. Is this entertainment?

Should F1 go back to 2 Qualifying sessions?

Start: 8-Aug-2000
End: 14-Aug-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

In the old days there were two 1 hour Qualifying sessions for each Grand Prix, one on Friday (or Thursday in Monaco) and one at the current time on Saturday. A drivers best time over the two sessions then determined his grid position. This ended in 1996 when it was decided that a single 1 hour do-or-die session would create the grid come what may. The German grid of Jordan on 17th and Ferrari on 18th would have been very unlikely with the old system. Were the old ways better?

Some of the points to consider are:
- Having Jordan and Ferrari start at the back in Germany made the race much more exciting
- Good weather on the first session and bad on the 2nd would mean no one would drive the 2nd session, no fun for the fans sat in the rain.
- Having real action on Friday would in theory increase spectators except most people would be stuck at work.

So if there is a return to two sessions should there also be a return to the best lap time of the two being used for the grid. How about adding a drivers best time in each of the two sessions together then using that combined time to form the grid? This would ensure action on both days.

Thanks to reader alexandercamejo for suggesting the question.

Will Michael Schumacher win the Championship?

Start: 1-Aug-2000
End: 7-Aug-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

A relatively lightweight question this week and in fact a repeat of our first question at the start of the season. Michael started the year very strongly and up until Monaco the season was going very well despite a mess-up in Spain. Since then he has only finished one of the last 5 races although the one was a win this is not good for his championship. After a slow start the McLaren boys side by side have been catching up on the points and now even his team mate Barrichello is within 10 points of the front. A mixture of bad luck and over enthusiasm (in Germany - or was it carelessness!) have seen his chances leveling off. Will he get his season back on course and who is the biggest threat now?

Would you buy a 100$ share in an F1 team?

Start: 25-Jul-2000
End: 31-Jul-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Background: This is another vote suggested by one of our readers and it works on two levels. It could mean that you feel F1 is a growing business and your 100$ share might be worth more in the future. Or it could mean, that given a unique oportunity to own a piece of F1, you would take one or more 100$ pieces of the action.

As a partial team owner what would be the return? Hospitality seats, dinner with the drivers, a seat in the pit garage, a say in track strategy? Tell us if you would become involved and how you would like to be rewarded.

Would it be better if the grid was reversed and the best drivers started from the back?

Start: 18-Jul-2000
End: 24-Jul-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Qualifying is upside down?
The principal of the Qualifying session seems to be to put the best driver/car combinations at the front of the grid so they have to do less racing. Why not give the best the most work to do? How about making the grid positions dependant upon the drivers result in the last race or even position in the championship - and then reverse them. That would put the previous winner or championship leader at the back of the grid with the less sucessful drivers at the front. OK some would say first corner carnage. Surely not, its one thing to know that if the car in front gets away then you will never catch him, its another to know that the fast guys are behind and your job is to last the 50 plus laps working your way through the field without being overtaken. In the last few years there have been some great races when, for various reasons, Schumacher or Hakkinen have found themselves near last at the end of lap one.

Is the use of team orders good for Formula 1?

Start: 11-Jul-2000
End: 17-Jul-2000

See the READER COMMENTS for this vote.

Definition of Team Orders: when a team requests that one of their drivers modifies his on track performance to the advantage of the other.

Background: After it was voted that Formula One was absolutely definately a sport (14 June vote) we felt it would be interesting to consider the (unsporting?) matter of team orders. A subject which Ferrari take as part of the business (sorry - Sport) of F1 while McLaren insist is not part of their sport (sorry - business). Could Barrichello have won Canada without team orders? Would Hakkinen have won France and Britain with team orders? Would a jockey slow down after the last fence if the horse owner wanted one of his other horses to win? What do you think?
